Social media manager vs marketing manager vs video editor
The social media manager runs approved public-channel execution. The marketing manager owns growth priorities and experiments. The video editor produces and revises the assets. In a creator agency, these roles collaborate around the same post but should have clear decision rights. This guide focuses on the handoffs that make daily publishing work.

Compare the output each role is responsible for
The marketing manager’s output includes acquisition priorities, hypotheses, briefs and an interpretation of commercial results. The video editor’s output is a usable, approved asset built from the brief and permitted source material. The social media manager’s output is a correctly published and verified post, an attended community queue and an accurate operational record.
Titles vary across agencies, so inspect actual responsibilities rather than relying on the name alone. In a small team, one person may perform several functions, but the decisions still need to be clear. Being able to edit does not automatically authorize changing the strategy. Having a strategy idea does not authorize publishing without creator approval.
Bunny’s social role is specifically SFW and never handles paid-page content. Reddit remains with the marketing manager under the published scope. The portfolio is agreed in the interview. Those boundaries matter when comparing vacancies: an industry title cannot establish which platforms, accounts or content types a particular contract includes.
Follow one fictional post across the three roles
Suppose a fictional adult lifestyle creator approves a neutral coffee tutorial. Marketing explains the audience question and the purpose of the post. The brief identifies the format, message, permitted call to action, creator boundaries and how the result will be reviewed. Those decisions give production a clear target rather than an instruction to make something viral.
The editor turns the approved source into a suitable cut, checks the required elements and identifies the delivered version. If a requested shot or sound lacks permission, the editor flags it. The asset should arrive with enough information for the social manager to know what was approved and which variants belong to which platform.
The social manager checks that package against the account, prepares the approved caption and cover, schedules it and verifies the public result. If a new caption claim would change the brief, the manager asks the owner. If the scheduler fails, the manager investigates delivery. Each role contributes to the same outcome through different decisions.
Clarify who approves, who executes and who is informed
An approval matrix can list the decision, proposer, approver, executor and people who need an update. For a substantive creative change, marketing and the designated creator approval owner may need to decide. For an upload retry, the social manager may have authority after native verification. Define these boundaries before a deadline creates pressure to guess.
Approval should refer to a version and intended use. A creator agreeing to one clip does not automatically approve every future caption, crop or destination. An editor sending a file does not necessarily mean creator approval is complete. A social manager scheduling it should be able to identify the actual authorization rather than infer it from delivery.
Do not turn every routine correction into a meeting. Agree which spelling, layout or technical fixes the manager can make and what requires another review. Clear delegated authority improves speed while keeping material changes controlled. The best matrix is short enough that a cover manager can use it during an ordinary publishing window.
Route common problems to the right owner
A subtitle error goes to the production owner with the clip ID, timestamp and requested correction. A missing approval goes to the designated approver. A publishing failure stays with the social execution owner until the public state is known. A strategy question goes to marketing with evidence and a specific decision request.
An account restriction may require joint work. The social manager documents the notice, affected queue and timeline. Marketing reviews the policy or creative implications. An authorized account owner may handle support or an appeal. Name one incident coordinator so parallel effort does not produce contradictory submissions or leave everyone assuming another person is responsible.
A creator asking for a prohibited post needs a respectful hold and escalation, regardless of which teammate receives the request. Neither creator consent nor internal seniority overrides platform restrictions. Conversely, platform permission does not override the creator’s boundaries. The response should explain the issue and ask for a permitted alternative through the agreed decision process.
Keep performance ownership connected without confusing attribution
The editor can report delivery and revision information. The social manager reports planned versus published work, verification, community coverage and account incidents. Marketing interprets growth experiments and the wider funnel. Shared results benefit from common definitions, but the team should not force every role into the same metric simply because it is visible.
If reach rises and clicks fall, social contributes accurate publication and source records. The editor can explain creative changes. Marketing examines the hypothesis, audience and destination context. Do not assume the social manager caused the entire change because they pressed publish, or that the editor’s asset alone determined the downstream outcome.
Use a short joint review when evidence crosses responsibilities. Identify what changed, what remains uncertain, which action is approved and who owns it. This creates useful collaboration without dissolving accountability. A shared dashboard becomes more valuable when each person knows which question they are expected to answer from it.
Choose a role based on the work you want to own
If you enjoy organized queues, careful publishing checks, community triage and clear handovers, the social role may fit your strengths. Bring evidence of reliability and judgment across accounts. If you prefer research, experiment design and commercial analysis, explore the marketing vacancy and its strategy guides rather than assuming the execution role includes those decisions.
If your strongest craft is cutting footage, pacing, subtitles and visual delivery, investigate actual editor openings when they are published. A description of editing as an agency function is not itself an advertised vacancy. Check the live positions list before assuming a particular specialist role is accepting applications.
During hiring, ask who supplies assets, who approves changes, which platforms you own, how portfolio size is agreed and what coverage is expected. Those answers matter more than a broad title. Describe your real contribution in previous teams and explain where collaboration improved the result without claiming responsibility for work another specialist performed.
Questions about this workflow
Does a social media manager decide the growth strategy?+
In Bunny’s published division of work, marketing owns strategy and experiments while social owns execution. The social manager supplies observations and suggestions, but material changes follow the approved decision process.
Can the social manager make basic edits?+
Only within the agreed authority. CapCut basics and Canva can support preparation, while the editor supplies the assets. A change in meaning, framing or creator boundaries needs the relevant review.
Who handles a failed scheduled post?+
The assigned social execution owner checks the native account, records the public state and coordinates any retry. If the cause concerns an asset, approval or restriction, involve the relevant owner without abandoning incident coordination.
Is the social role a chatter position?+
No. Bunny’s role manages public SFW channels and never handles paid-page content. Subscriber conversations and sales on the paid page belong to a different role with different responsibilities.
What should I ask before accepting a role?+
Clarify decision rights, assets, approval, platforms, portfolio, coverage and escalation. Read the actual contract and vacancy. Similar job titles can describe materially different work across agencies.
